Third Sunday of Advent Reflection

The third Sunday of Advent was always my favorite as a kid... mostly because it was the day the pink candle was lit, but also because the season seemed to shift. The sadness that once surrounded the disappearance of the warm sun seemed to fade; the brown grass and barren trees were no longer lifeless–there was something life-giving in the air. Everything felt lighter after the lighting of the pink candle, but only recently have I paid attention to why that is: Joy is the reality of Gaudete Sunday.

Today's first reading sings God's praises, highlighting the ways that the earth, God's creation, rises, rejoices, and blooms in response to the Goodness of our God. These happy colors and characterizations fill the verses that we read from Isaiah and (depending on where you are in the world) feel quite contrary to the weather around us. Likewise, the feeble, the weak, and the frightened are called upon and built up–we, along with the rest of the earth, are called to true joy–this deep sense of security and freedom that we find in today's (and every day's) Gospel, the realization of and coming into unity with God.

This word means so much more than a smile on a bright day, more than skipping down the sidewalk–it's the hope, the life, the trust, and the mission that drives. We can see this joy in today's Gospel in John the Baptist–his work of preparation for the coming of Christ Jesus would not have been successful without his joy in the Lord. Like him, we must be patient in waiting for the precious fruit and stand firm with one another as we await the birth of Christ. In this joy, we find ourselves closer to the Father than ever.

As I sit with the readings and songs of the day, I can't help but deeply know that this joy we are so gently reminded of on Gaudete Sunday is meant to be carried with us every day. This day, in a special way, we look forward to the miraculous birth of Christ, knowing full well that we are and have always been in God's life. With this season, we are reminded that God chose to be in our lives, too. Let us live this and every day while wearing that blessing, that gift of security and freedom, that joy.

El tercer domingo de Adviento siempre fue mi favorito de niño… principalmente porque era el día en que se encendía la vela rosa, pero también porque la estación parecía cambiar. La tristeza que antes rodeaba la desaparición del cálido sol parecía desvanecerse; la hierba seca y los árboles desnudos ya no parecían sin vida: había algo vivificante en el aire. Todo se sentía más ligero después de encender la vela rosa, pero solo recientemente he prestado atención a la razón: la alegría es la esencia del Domingo de Gaudete.

La primera lectura de hoy canta las alabanzas de Dios, destacando cómo la tierra, la creación de Dios, se levanta, se regocija y florece en respuesta a la bondad de nuestro Dios. Estos colores y descripciones alegres llenan los versículos que leemos de Isaías y (dependiendo de dónde te encuentres en el mundo) contrastan con el clima que nos rodea. Del mismo modo, se llama a los débiles, a los frágiles y a los temerosos, y se les fortalece: nosotros, junto con el resto de la tierra, estamos llamados a la verdadera alegría, esa profunda sensación de seguridad y libertad que encontramos en el Evangelio de hoy (y de cada día), la realización y la unión con Dios.

Esta palabra significa mucho más que una sonrisa en un día soleado, más que saltar de alegría por la calle; es la esperanza, la vida, la confianza y la misión que nos impulsa. Podemos ver esta alegría en el Evangelio de hoy en Juan el Bautista: su labor de preparación para la venida de Cristo Jesús no habría tenido éxito sin su alegría en el Señor. Como él, debemos ser pacientes al esperar el precioso fruto y permanecer firmes unos con otros mientras esperamos el nacimiento de Cristo. En esta alegría, nos encontramos más cerca del Padre que nunca.

Mientras medito en las lecturas y los cantos del día, no puedo evitar sentir profundamente que esta alegría, que se nos recuerda con tanta delicadeza en el Domingo de Gaudete, debe acompañarnos cada día. En este día, de manera especial, esperamos con ilusión el nacimiento milagroso de Cristo, sabiendo que estamos y siempre hemos estado en la vida de Dios. En esta época, se nos recuerda que Dios también eligió estar en nuestras vidas. Vivamos este y todos los días con esa bendición, ese don de seguridad y libertad, esa alegría.
